WHAT ARE CLOTH NAPPIES?
Cloth nappies are nappies that you don't throw away. They are designed to be reused again and again, and are made of super soft fabric rather than plastic which can be found in single-use nappies. Cloth nappies might be called different things, such as 'reusable nappies' or 'washable nappies' but it all means the same thing!
WHY SHOULD I CHOOSE CLOTH NAPPIES?
More and more parents are choosing to use cloth nappies for their baby. Cloth nappies have many benefits:
Free from nasties
Cloth nappies are better for bums. They are made from super absorbent fabric rather than chemical gels which can be found in other nappies. This may irritate your baby's skin less and can reduce nappy rash.* It's also been known that when ready, your toddler could be toilet training up to 6 months earlier than their single-use wearing friends, which can aid their development and independence.**
*Studies have shown that your child is five times more likely to suffer from nappy rash if you use disposable nappies rather than cloth nappies. This is due to the chemicals in disposable nappies evoking the feeling of dryness when in fact your child is wet; meaning you may leave your nappy on longer between changes. Nappy rash can be caused by a number of things such as sickness, teething, and in some instances food allergies or a reaction to baby products such as wipes and creams.
**Studies have shown toddlers who wear cloth nappies are likely to toilet train up to 6 months earlier than their disposable wearing friends, which can aid their development and independence.
Cloth nappies are better for your pocket. You can save up to $2000 when choosing cloth nappies, and even more if you use your nappies with a second child. The bottom line is, even by switching to one cloth nappy a day in place of a single-use nappy, you can make significant financial savings.
Cloth nappies are better for our planet. 250 million single-use nappies are thrown away across the world every day (that's 90 billion a year!)† Every nappy can take up to 500 years to decompose in landfill.‡ So using cloth nappies can reduce your household plastic waste and your carbon footprint by 40%.§

& super stylish
And they look super cute too. Not much is better than a beautifully designed nappy for the most stylish (and eco-chic) little bottoms.
BUT, ARE CLOTH NAPPIES REALLY BETTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT?
Yes. When washed responsibly and according to our care instructions, cloth nappies are 40% better for the environment. ¶

HOW DO CLOTH NAPPIES WORK?
Cloth nappies work in exactly the same way as any other nappy. The only difference is that when it comes to change-time, you set your nappy aside for laundry day rather than throwing it away. There are some step by step tips we will share with you to help use our products when you start your cloth nappy journey (we're here to help!)
ARE CLOTH NAPPIES EASY TO USE?
Yes. Our nappies are designed to be easy to use (and make change-time extra cute!) They're made with fabrics that will wash efficiently and dry quickly too. You can also choose to use an additional nappy liner to make every nappy change fuss-free.
DO CLOTH NAPPIES WORK AS WELL?
The first thing a nappy has to do is perform and cloth nappies do just that. Cloth nappies use multiple layers of super absorbent fabric for ultimate leak protection. You can experience leaks in every type of nappy, you just need to ensure you have the right fit for your baby.
ARE CLOTH NAPPIES HYGENIC?
Yes. Stored and washed correctly, cloth nappies are as hygenic as any other nappy. To ensure your nappies are as good as new after every wash, click here to follow our laundry guide.
IS THERE LOTS MORE LAUNDRY FOR ME TO DO?
Not lots. Babies come with extra loads of laundry so what's one more wash? Simply pop your nappies into the washing machine and let the machine do the work. Plus, you won't have to empty your bin as often as there'll be no nappies in there.
DO I HAVE TO USE CLOTH NAPPIES ALL OF THE TIME?
No. Lots of parents use cloth nappies part-time. Usually, this is at home where you can start slow and gradually build up to using full-time when you get into your flow.
ARE CLOTH NAPPIES EXPENSIVE?
Overall, they'll save you money. The initial cost of choosing to reuse can seem expensive, but in the long run you can save over $2000 when using cloth nappies in comparison to single-use nappies. Plus, there are more savings to be had when you use your nappies on another child too.
CAN I HAVE HELP PURCHASING MY NAPPIES?
Yes, there are ways to help with the upfront cost of getting started with cloth nappies:
1. Your local council - Many councils offer incentives, such as money off vouchers, towards cloth nappies. Below are some councils who we currently work with. Please contact your local council to see if there is a cloth nappy incentive scheme in your area.

WHICH NAPPY DO I CHOOSE?
HOW MANY NAPPIES DO I NEED?
When your baby is young nappies should be regularly checked and changed every 2-4 hours. The number of cloth nappies you need will depend on a few things:
√ Do you intend to use cloth nappies full-time or part-time? Some parents choose to use cloth nappies only when they are at home.
√ How often do you want to wash your nappies? You will need to ensure you have enough nappies to use when your others are in the wash, drying and ready to use again. Normally, nappies are washed every 2 days.
When getting started, we recommend around 8 nappies for part-time use and 16 nappies for full-time use, but it does depend on your planned routine.
WHAT DO I NEED?
What you need depends on whether you are planning to be a full-time or part-time cloth nappy user. When getting started, we recommend you have enough nappies for 2 days worth of nappy changing so you have enough nappies to use while your others are in the wash, drying and are ready to use again. We also recommend choosing somewhere to store dirty nappies before washing. And don't forget, you'll need your washing machine!
BUT, DO I NEED ANYTHING ELSE?

CAN I USE MY NAPPIES FROM NEWBORN?
Our nappies are suitable for use from newborn, but this is dependent on the size and shape of your baby. Our onesize* nappies are a little larger in size so that they can fit all the way up to toilet training. The most appropriate product to use for newborn is an insert + mioduo nappy cover, and then you can move onto another nappy as your baby gets bigger.
*true for most babies but due to a wide range of shapes and sizes this cannot be guaranteed.
CAN I USE MY NAPPIES IN THE MATERNITY WARD?
We recommend confirming your plans with your hospital as they will have their own procedures and rules (just in case). Make sure you have enough nappies for your hospital stay, along with a few storage solutions for your used nappies. Our wet bags are handy to keep used nappies in when away from home, and the bags can easily be taken home to wash nappies and return with fresh ones if your hospital is unable to help you with cleaning solutions.
WHAT DO I DO WHEN I’M OUT AND ABOUT?
Pack your change bag with everything you need for your trip out, including enough nappies. When it comes to change-time, simply store your used nappies in your waterproof wet bag or your change bag's 'messy' pocket to keep them separate. When you get home, ensure you've separated the poo from your nappies. You can then transfer them into your nappy storage or pop them straight into the washing machine. Simple!
I'M READY FOR TOILET TRAINING, HOW MANY TRAINING UNDIES DO I NEED?
HOW MANY SWIM NAPPIES DO I NEED?
It's likely you will only need 1 pair of swim nappies for your short time in the pool (however, it's always handy to keep a spare). If going on holiday, we recommend taking around 4 swim nappies so it gives you enough to use throughout the day and rinse overnight for the next day.
Visit our GET STARTED page for more information.
I’VE GOT MY NAPPIES, NOW WHAT SHOULD I DO?
Congratulations, you've take the first step towards using cloth nappies! Now preparation is key. Before you get those super cute nappies onto your baby's bottom you'll need to prewash* your products at least once. This will make them more absorbent and super soft before you start to use them. The more you wash your nappies, the more absorbent they will get. See our laundry guide for instructions on how to wash your nappies.
*Take care that you have purchased the correct product as washed nappies cannot be exchanged or refunded.
HOW DO I CHANGE A CLOTH NAPPY?
Remember, nappies should be checked and changed every 2-4 hours, or when a poo has happened just like any nappy. As your baby gets bigger, you may find that you need to change your nappy more frequently.
HOW CAN I MAKE SURE I HAVE THE RIGHT FIT?
Getting the right fit for your baby is important, so make sure you adjust the nappy to suit the shape of your little one. Firstly, ensure you are using the correct size nappy. Then follow the steps below to ensure you get the right fit around the waist and legs.
MY BABY FEELS WET, IS THIS RIGHT?
Yes, your baby will feel a little more wetness than other nappies as there are no chemicals to absorb the moisture. This isn't a bad thing; your baby will not be uncomfortable if you are changing your nappy regularly every 2-4 hours. Reusable nappy liners can be used as an addition to keep your baby extra dry.
WHY ARE MY NAPPIES LEAKING?
Oops! There could be a few simple reasons why your nappies are leaking:
If none of the above has helped please contact our Customer Care team at firstname.lastname@example.org and we'll get you back on track.
HOW DO I ADD EXTRA ABSORBENCY TO MY NAPPIES?
You may find that you need more absorbency in your nappies. You can add extra inserts to your nappy to maximise performance and build the right level of absorbency for your baby**.
**Ensure our mioboost is used with the label side facing down, away from your baby's skin.
CAN I USE REUSABLE NAPPIES OVERNIGHT?
Absolutely! Cloth nappies are great to use when your baby starts sleeping through the night. If you wish to use your nappies at night, you may need to make some adjustments to your daytime nappy to handle the longer hours of sleep. Our mioboost is snooze approved and is the perfect addition to any cloth nappy to maximise absorbency overnight.
HOW SHOULD I STORE MY NAPPIES?
Fresh nappies can be stored however you like! Used nappies can be stored in a laundry bucket or bag before washing. You can store your nappies dry, there's no need to add anything else. You should empty your storage every few days; we recommend storing used nappies for no longer than 3 days.
HOW SHOULD I WASH MY NAPPIES?
When washing day arrives, lift the laundry bag out of the bucket and transfer into the washing machine. Nappies will wash within the laundry bag so there is no need to handle dirty nappies. Don't overload your washing machine to allow your nappies to wriggle around in the wash and get extra clean.
It's important that you wash all Bambino Mio products in accordance with the washing instructions on the garment label. We recommend washing your nappies up to 60°C with non-biological laundry detergent (use as appropriate). Do not use fabric softener when washing, as this can affect the absorbency of your nappies.
We recommend adding 2 heaped tablespoons of laundry cleanser to your washing detergent drawer too. This will add a boost to your laundry and help tackle tough stains and odours†.
†Please note that bright colours may fade over time. Washing regularly at higher temperatures can result in premature deterioration of your nappies.
TOP TIP: Remember to fold back the hook and loop fastenings to protect them in the wash!
WHAT DETERGENT SHOULD I USE?
Your normal laundry detergent will be fine for washing cloth nappies. We recommend selecting a non-biological detergent (enzyme free) over a biological one as they are less likely to irritate the skin. Our non-bio natural laundry detergent is free from nasties and is perfect for your little one's delicate skin.
HOW SHOULD I DRY MY NAPPIES?
"We recommend air drying your nappies away from direct heat. When hanging nappies, hang by the fabric core insert to avoid any damage to your nappies. Nappies can be tumble dried on a low/cold setting. ‡
‡Frequent tumble drying and contact with direct heat can result in premature deterioration of your nappies.
TOP TIP: If you're using the miosolo all-in-one nappy, pull out the absorbent core from inside the nappy as this will help them dry quicker!
CAN I IRON MY NAPPIES?
No, please don't iron your nappies, as this can affect their performance.
HOW CAN I REMOVE STAINS?
Over time, your nappies may become a little stained and there's nothing wrong with that! There are a few simple ways you can keep your nappies looking as good as new. Using laundry cleanser in your nappy wash regularly can help prevent staining on your nappies. Sunlight is also a great natural way to remove stains. Alternatively, you can "strip wash" your nappies once in a while to freshen them up. See below for details about how to strip wash your nappies.
WHAT IS "STRIP WASHING"?
Strip washing is a term you may have come across. Essentially, it means giving your nappies a deep clean. Over time, there may be a build up of laundry detergent in your nappies, which can result in a strong smell and sometimes reduced absorbency. Doing a "strip wash" will restore your nappies to their optimum performance. This is also great for removing stains too§.
§Strip washing nappies too frequently can can result in premature deterioration of your nappies.
HOW DO I STRIP WASH MY NAPPIES?
Simply soak your nappies in a hand hot solution of laundry cleanser for at least 2 hours. Use 1-2 heaped tablespoons of laundry cleanser for every 4 litres of water. After soaking, wash your nappies in the washing machine as you normally would. We would recommend giving your nappies an additional rinse after your cycle to be sure all the detergent has been removed.
Please note: you must ONLY soak the core of your nappies in this solution, keeping the laminated outer fabric (shell) out of the water. Bambino Mio cannot be responsible for any deterioration to the products after incorrect soaking.
HOW DO I GET INTO A ROUTINE?
Don't worry if things start a little shaky. You'll find your flow and we're here to help you through your cloth nappy journey. Follow our essential STEPS TO SUCCESS guide to help you get into your cloth nappy routine.

HOW DO YOUR TOILET TRAINING UNDIES WORK?
Our toilet training undies are not designed for full absorption like our nappies, and are designed to help contain little accidents to help make the transition from nappies to big-kid undies. They have a concealed water resistant layer and inner pad that hold small amounts of liquid. This allows your toddler to feel wetness and associate this feeling with needing to use the potty to help aid your toilet training journey.
HOW DO YOUR SWIM NAPPIES WORK?
Our swim nappies are designed to catch and contain solids in the water. Just like other swimwear, our swim nappies do not absorb liquids, and are designed to let water out to avoid weighing your baby down in the water. We advise checking with your local swimming pool on their requirements before use.
WHAT CAN I DO WITH MY PRODUCTS ONCE I NO LONGER USE THEM?
We always encourage reuse of our products where possible. There are lots of ways your nappies can be loved again and again. You can save them if you’re planning on another little arrival, share them with family and friends so they can give cloth a try, donate to your local nappy library who would love extra donations, sell them for some extra cents or repurpose the fabric into something else, like household cleaning cloths.
